The word rotifer means "wheeled animals" because of the wheel-like feeding appendages which appear to be rotating. Rotifers are microscopic organisms, ranging in size from 100-2500 microns, that form one of the most basic links in the aquatic food chain. Specific strains of rotifers are being aquacultured intensively and have been used to raise over 70 species of marine fish and 18 species of crustaceans.

We are currently culturing the "L" strain of rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis) , which range in size from 150-360 microns. These rotifers are half the size of newly hatched brine shrimp, giving smaller organisms a chance to feed.

Our Live Rotifers HD are a plankton feed perfect for hard corals, soft corals, larval fish, and other reef carnivores that feed on small zooplankton.

Rotifers are a critical feed used in marine fish and invertebrate hatcheries around the world. Our live rotifers can be shipped anywhere throughout Australia via the Australia Post Express Post network and can be refrigerated for weeks without impacting on their survivability due our method of placing them into a dormant phase.

Each 500ml bag contains on average 1/2 million live viable rotifers (at a density of 1,000 rotifers per ml) that you can either feed out to your reef inhabitants, feed your larval fish, or start your own continuous culture with. This is the equivalent to 2 1/2 liters of rotifer culture of a density of 200 rotifers per ml, or 10 liters of rotifer culture of a density of 50 per ml. Our method for culturing, enriching, and packaging of live rotifers makes it easy for anyone to have a go at raising larval fish, or just to provide a highly nutritious feed to your reef inhabitants.

For starting your own rotifer culture, we recommend using our Rotifer Diet Algae concentrate, available in our Store. We also recommend purchasing some 50 micron plankton mesh to harvest your rotifers. We also have a discounted Rotifer Starter Kit, which has all the basics you will need to start off.

Prior to shipping, both fresh rotifer diet and ammonia neutralizer are added to ensure not only live arrival, but to allow the culture to thrive and grow.

Postage Costs

Due to our rotifer cultures being in a live dormant state, we need to ensure that they are kept chilled and express posted to your door. Because of this we pack the culture with high tech ice packs with foam insulation to ensure that they get to you in peak condition.
